Scholastic Building

120,000 square feet
10 stories
New York, New York
2001

The world headquarters of the educational publisher Scholastic Inc. provides new office and retail space in a ten-story building on the edge of SoHo. Designed in collaboration with Aldo Rossi, and posthumously completed, the building honors the architectural traditions of its landmarked SoHo neighborhood in a contemporary architectural vocabulary. The infill development was the first new building constructed in the SoHo Cast Iron Historic District.

The Scholastic Building's Broadway façade features steel, terra-cotta, and stone. The design takes its inspiration from the classical organization of the elegant 19th-century façades that line the street.

Equal in scale and dimension, the building’s opposite façade on Mercer Street expresses a utilitarian and industrial character more suitable for its context.
