João Trevisan
b. 1986, Brasilia, Brazil

João Trevisan works across mediums including painting, sculpture, video, installation, and performance. His paintings are made through a meditative process that entails sweeping the surface with his brushes more than 500 times to achieve the particular polished effect. His black paintings, often shown serially, like the ones on view here, prompt slow and careful looking and consideration of how they interact with lighting conditions. They also obliquely refer to musical scores, with the spaces between shapes and the spaces between paintings functioning as interludes.

João lives and works in Brasilia, Brazil. He studied law but works full time as an artist. His first solo museum exhibition was held at the São Paulo at the Museum of Sacred Art in 2021, and he was part of the group exhibition “The Substance of Earth: O Sertão” at Slag Gallery in New York. He has an upcoming site-specific commission for an exhibition of contemporary art at the Giza Plateau in Egypt.
