Works by Cordy Ryman, 2020-2021 on view at the MA Office

Cordy Ryman
b. 1971, New York, United States

Cordy Ryman’s works exist in a realm between painting and sculpture, drawing on various legacies of the 1960s and 1970s, including the use of industrial materials and attention to site. As the works are painted on five sides, they create a play of light, shadows, and reflection while still maintaining an assertive physical thickness that pushes out into sculptural space.

Ryman’s installation of 39 works at the MA office comes from his 2021 exhibition “Constellations” at Freight+Volume Gallery in New York. For the exhibition, Ryman created a series of site-specific installations that responded to the gallery’s spaces, grouping small-scale works on three adjacent gallery walls in arrangements that radiated outward. At MA, the works are also installed on three walls, but in a smaller quantity and different configuration. The installation on view in the office was conceived by Ryman in consultation with Morris Adjmi.
